How Does Golf Betting Work? Outrights, Top Finishes and Matchups

A golf tournament is a four-day race with a huge field and frequent ties. Outrights, each-way terms, top-10 bets, head-to-head matchups and the dead heat rule, worked through.

Golf betting differs from most sports because you are not picking between two sides. A typical professional tournament has a field of well over a hundred players and runs over four rounds, usually Thursday to Sunday. The headline market is the outright winner, and the prices are long because so many players can win. Around it sit each-way bets, top-finish markets, head-to-head matchups and round-by-round bets. Ties are common in golf, so the dead heat rule affects more golf bets than bets in almost any other sport.

Outright winner

An outright bet picks the player who wins the tournament. Even the favourite usually carries a plus price, because the chance that any one player beats the whole field is small. It is common to see the leading names at prices such as 10/1 and much of the field at 100/1 or longer.

Outright markets also carry a large built-in margin. Convert every player's price into an implied probability and add them up, and the total sits well above 100%, because the margin is spread across every name in the field. The expected value explainer shows how to read that kind of cost.

Each-way bets

An each-way bet is two equal bets in one: one on the player to win, and one on the player to finish within a set number of places. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds. The terms are printed with the market, for example one-fifth of the odds for the top five places; both the fraction and the number of places vary between sportsbooks and events.

A worked example with a $10 each-way bet, which costs $20 in total, on a player at 40/1 with one-fifth odds for the top five:

  • Player wins: the win part returns $410 and the place part returns $90 (8/1 plus the $10 stake), so $500 back from $20.
  • Player finishes third: the win part loses; the place part returns $90, a $70 profit on the $20 staked.
  • Player finishes twentieth: both parts lose, −$20.

Top-finish markets

Top 5, top 10 and top 20 bets ask only whether a player finishes inside that range. They pay less than an outright but win more often. These markets are where the dead heat rule matters most.

The dead heat rule

Golf leaderboards often show several players sharing a position. If a tie straddles the cut-off for a top-finish bet, the stake is divided by the number of players tied for the remaining places. Suppose $30 is staked on a player to finish in the top 10 at +300. The player finishes tied for tenth with two others, and only one place (tenth) remains. One third of the stake, $10, is paid at full odds and returns $40; the other $20 loses. The bet ends $10 up rather than $90 up.

Matchups and three-balls

Head-to-head bets compare two players and ignore the rest of the field:

  • Tournament matchup. Which of two players finishes higher over the full event. A player who misses the cut normally loses to one who makes it.
  • Round matchup. Which player shoots the lower score in a single round.
  • Three-balls. Betting on the best score within an actual playing group of three, usually in the opening rounds.

Ties in matchups are settled by the market's rules: some include the tie as a selection, others refund the stake, and three-balls often use dead heat rules.

Other popular markets

  • First-round leader. A single-round question with long prices, and frequent ties settled by dead heat.
  • Winning score and margin. Totals and spreads applied to the leaderboard.
  • Nationality or group betting. The best player from a defined group.
  • In-play. Prices update hole by hole; some players bet on exchanges, where golfers can also be laid, as explained in what a betting exchange is.

Withdrawals, weather and settlement

A player who withdraws before teeing off usually has bets voided. Once a player has teed off, outright and top-finish bets generally stand even if they withdraw later. Weather can shorten a tournament to fewer rounds; bets are then settled on the official result. Tee times matter too: players in the morning and afternoon waves can face very different conditions on the same day, which is one reason golf results are so hard to predict.

Prices differ between books

Because golf fields are large and each sportsbook prices them independently, the same player can carry noticeably different odds and each-way terms from one book to another. Comparing them is the approach covered in what line shopping is, and it applies to the place terms as much as to the odds.

Common questions

Why are golf odds so long?

With a large field, form that changes week to week and four rounds of variable weather, even the best player in the world loses far more tournaments than they win.

Is each-way always better?

No. It costs twice the stake, and the place part pays only a fraction of the odds. It changes the shape of the bet, not its cost.

Golf betting is for adults in places where it is lawful; a tournament lasts four days, so fix the week's total before Thursday's first tee time and leave it there.

Ground rules

Statements that hold on any platform

General points we lean on in nearly every article, whatever the game or market.

  • Every commercial game and betting market is priced to leave the operator in profit across many rounds.

  • A spin, a card or a match result has no memory of what came before it.

  • Promotional money almost always comes with conditions attached to withdrawal.

  • The legal age and the legal status of gambling depend on where you are standing when you play.

  • Fast games and in-play markets apply their cost more often per hour than slower ones.

  • Free, confidential support for gambling problems is available in most countries.
